LEGAL BUT DANGEROUS: OTC AND RX DRUGS

Description : Real teens talk about problems they’ve had using OTC drugs they thought were harmless. Others discuss how they got in trouble using drugs prescribed for someone else. Experts explore why teens will experiment with pills, which are often easier for them to get than alcohol or marijuana. In a culture where the belief persists that every problem can be solved with a pill, teens naively think that if the medication could hurt you, it wouldn’t be available. Experts explain how drugs affect the body and how everyone’s reaction to a drug is unique. The program also addresses the issue of substances that sold in health food stores that are unregulated, and sometimes harmful. No quality-control procedures exist for these unregulated products that have been shown to cause serious harm, and in some cases, death. The program also looks at how the Internet is fueling teens’ illegal use of prescription drugs. Students will: LEARN why Over The Counter Drugs and prescription drugs can be very dangerous if used improperly, UNDERSTAND and that just because a doctor has a prescribed a drug, doesn’t mean it has no potential to cause harm, especially when the person who takes it was not given the prescription. BE MADE AWARE of the potential dangers of unregulated substances bold in health food stores and on the Internet. Grade Level : 7 - 12
