MODELS FOR EXPLICIT TEACHING PRE K-3: Two Inservice Videotapes

Tape 1: Balanced Literacy gives an overall portrait of the literacy framework in place in the Toronto Catholic District Schools. This framework is based on a "blocks" model of balanced literacy instruction in which the daily literacy instruction period is divided into major instructional components that can include word study, writing, self-selected or independent reading, and guided and shared reading.

Tape 2: Guided Reading gives viewers a closer look at small-group reading instruction. The emphasis is on the teacher's role in structuring, instructing, and assessing small groups in a larger classroom setting. Shot in numerous classrooms across this urban school district, these tapes include:

About the Author: The Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) serves over 100,000 students in Metropolitan Toronto. A significant number of children enter Junior Kindergarten with limited exposure to the kinds of literacy experiences that will prepare them for success in schools. In addition, over 40 percent of all the TCDSB students speak a language other than English at home.

In response to the diverse needs of its student population, the TCDSB undertook a detailed review of language arts delivery in the primary division (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 3) and developed a three-year plan to address early literacy. At the core of this plan was the implementation of "Balanced Literacy," a preventive, research-based model designed to ensure that all students are able to read and write to their full potential by the end of grade 3.
