RELATIONSHIPS THAT HURT: DATING VIOLENCE AND ABUSE

Description : Real teens talk about what constitutes abuse and why they think teens are vulnerable in romantic relationships. Experts explain how teens often don’t tell anyone what is happening because they are ashamed, or they want to maintain control, and don’t want their parents stepping in to tell them what to do. This documentary-style program explores how abusers engage in violence in order exert power and control over the victim. Abusers try to isolate the victim from friends and family in order to maintain complete control. Teens are advised how to get help, and how to help a friend who is being abused. While girls are by far the most frequent targets, the fact that boys also can be victims of dating abuse, is explored and discussed. Student will: EXPLORE the dynamics in an abusive dating relationship. RECOGNIZE abusive behavior and the warning signs of abuse. UNDERSTAND the negative consequences of dating violence and how to avoid it. Grade Level : 7 - 12
