STUDENT WORKSHOP: I WAS JUST KIDDING! LEARNING ABOUT HARASSMENT

Grades 3-5

NOW AVAILABLE ON DVD!

It usually starts out as a joke, a game, or a taunt — it ends up with someone feeling upset, uncomfortable or belittled. This realistic program reveals how attitudes that promote harassment can unwittingly develop at an early age. Video focuses on respect as the key to reducing harassment of all types. Students quickly learn that they need to treat others as they would wish to be treated themselves.

On the playground, Sam tags Janet in a way that makes her feel uncomfortable. In the auditorium, Sarah sits down and crowds against Tom. In the school hall, boys run after girls, lifting their skirts. In the locker room, boys are pulling down each other’s pants and taunting each other. When asked about these events, the instigators would say they were ‘just kidding around.” But to the victims, this behavior does not feel like a joke.

Program heightens students’ awareness of how their behavior affects others. Pauses after dramatic vignettes offer students the opportunity to discuss think and talk about different forms of harassment. Includes a 8 1/2" x 11" teacher’s guide with 10 student worksheets, poster and game. (18 min) c2001
